Depression and Anxiety

Depression is more than just feeling sad, the symptoms can last for a long period of time. Its often a combination of several items:

  • Lack of interest in doing activities you once loved
  • Eating more or less than usual
  • Sleeping too much or having trouble falling asleep
  • Feeling tired, even after sleeping well
  • Feeling guilty or helpless
  • Thinking about suicide or harming yourself

Anxiety is when a feeling of panic interferes with daily activities, and often may be out of proportion to the actual danger and can last for an extended period. Symptoms can include:

  • Feeling Nervous
  • Having a sense of impeding danger or panic
  • Breathing rapidly
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Sweating
  • Having difficulty controlling worry

Trauma

Trauma is an emotional response to a terrible event such as an accident, crime, or natural disaster. Reactions to trauma can manifest immediately and can also be delayed and occur after decades.

Types of Trauma:

  • Acute Trauma—Triggered by an immediate one-time event
  • Chronic Trauma—Arises from repeated traumatic events
  • Complex Trauma-Multiple traumatic events without a possibility of escape
  • Secondary Trauma-Exposure to others suffering
  • Adverse Childhood Experience—Situations that you directly face/witness while growing up
